WIDAL Antigen Test
The Widal test is a diagnostic blood test primarily used to detect Enteric Fever, commonly known as typhoid and paratyphoid fever. It is exceptionally helpful in clinical settings because it identifies specific antibodies (O and H agglutinins) produced by the immune system in response to Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi bacteria. By measuring the titer or concentration of these antibodies, healthcare providers can gain crucial evidence to support a diagnosis when a patient presents with a prolonged fever, especially in areas where typhoid is endemic. Getting this test done early helps in initiating the correct antibiotic treatment, preventing severe complications like intestinal perforation or hemorrhage that can arise from untreated enteric fever.
