Urine Albumin Creatinine Ratio (UACR)
The Urine Protein Creatinine Ratio (UPCR) test is a vital diagnostic tool used primarily to screen for, monitor, and quantify proteinuria (excess protein in the urine), which is a hallmark sign of kidney damage or disease. Unlike a standard 24-hour urine collection—which is often cumbersome and prone to timing errors—the UPCR provides a highly accurate estimate of daily protein excretion from a single spot urine sample. By comparing the amount of protein to the amount of creatinine (a waste product filtered at a constant rate), the test corrects for variations in urine concentration. This makes it incredibly helpful for early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD), monitoring the effects of diabetes or hypertension on the kidneys, and assessing the risk of preeclampsia in pregnancy, allowing for timely medical intervention before significant organ damage occurs.
