Swab Culture (Aerobic)
An Aerobic Swab Culture is a fundamental diagnostic tool used to identify pathogenic bacteria that require oxygen to survive and grow. This test is typically ordered when a patient shows signs of a localized infection, such as redness, swelling, heat, or unusual discharge from a wound, surgical site, or mucosal surface. The process begins with a healthcare provider using a sterile swab to collect a sample from the suspected infection site. This sample is then transferred to a culture medium and incubated in an oxygen-rich environment at body temperature. Over a period of 24 to 48 hours, clinicians monitor the culture for microbial growth.
This test is vital for targeted antibiotic therapy. By identifying the exact cause of an infection, doctors can move away from broad-spectrum treatments and prescribe the most effective, specific medication, which improves patient outcomes and helps combat antibiotic resistance.
