SGOT / AST Test
The SGOT (Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase) test, also commonly known as AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), is a vital diagnostic tool used primarily to assess liver health and detect organ damage. When cells in the liver, heart, or muscles are injured, they leak this enzyme into the bloodstream; therefore, measuring its levels helps clinicians identify conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or even recent myocardial infarctions (heart attacks). It is particularly helpful for monitoring the side effects of medications that may be toxic to the liver or for evaluating patients exhibiting symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, or abdominal pain, allowing for early intervention before significant permanent damage occurs.
