Serum Lipase

A Serum Lipase test is used to identify and monitor disorders of the pancreas, most notably acute pancreatitis. Lipase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas to help the body break down dietary fats; while small amounts are normally found in the blood, high levels typically indicate that the pancreas is damaged or inflamed, causing the enzyme to leak into the bloodstream. This test is particularly helpful because lipase levels often rise earlier and remain elevated longer than other enzymes (like amylase), providing a more reliable window for doctors to diagnose pancreatic issues, rule out other causes of severe abdominal pain, and evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing treatment.
