Serum Amylase
The Serum Amylase test is used to investigate disorders of the pancreas, such as acute pancreatitis. Amylase is an enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands to help break down carbohydrates; when the pancreas becomes inflamed or damaged, this enzyme leaks into the bloodstream at significantly elevated levels. Getting this test done is incredibly helpful for quickly ruling in or ruling out pancreatic involvement when a patient experiences unexplained, severe abdominal pain. It allows clinicians to distinguish between a routine digestive issue and a potentially serious medical emergency, ensuring that the patient receives the correct intervention—such as hospitalization or specific imaging—before complications arise.
