Immunology
IgM Immunoglobulin Total
The IgM (Immunoglobulin M) test identifies the very first type of antibody the body produces when it encounters a new infection or foreign substance. Since IgM levels spike quickly and then decline as other antibodies (like IgG) take over, this test is exceptionally helpful for determining if an infection is acute or recent rather than a past exposure. Beyond tracking infections, it is also used to monitor chronic conditions like certain autoimmune disorders or cancers (such as Waldenström macroglobulinemia) and to evaluate the health of the immune system of patients, ensuring it is capable of mounting an initial defense against pathogens.
