HLA Typing (HLA B27)
The HLA Typing (HLA-B27) test is a genetic screening tool used to identify a specific protein (human leukocyte antigen) found on the surface of white blood cells. Getting this test is particularly helpful when a healthcare provider suspects an autoimmune disorder, specifically a group of conditions known as spondyloarthropathies. While having the HLA-B27 marker does not guarantee you have a disease, it serves as a powerful diagnostic piece of the puzzle for patients experiencing chronic joint pain, inflammation, or stiffness. It is most commonly used to support a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis, reactive arthritis, or uveitis, allowing for earlier intervention and more targeted treatment plans to manage long-term joint health.
