Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) I & II IgM Antibody
The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) I & II IgM Antibody Test is a blood test used to detect the presence of IgM antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (typically associated with oral herpes or cold sores) and Type 2 (typically associated with genital herpes).
Detecting Recent Infection: IgM antibodies are the first line of defense produced by the immune system after an initial exposure to the virus. Their presence usually indicates a recent or acute infection.
HSV-1 vs. HSV-2: While the test checks for antibodies to both strains, it often tests them together to determine if an active immune response to either virus is occurring.
Timing Matters: IgM levels typically rise within 1 to 2 weeks after the initial infection and can remain detectable for several weeks to a few months.
