Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase G6PD (Qual)
The Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Qualitative Test is a screening tool used to identify a deficiency in the G6PD enzyme. This enzyme plays a critical role in protecting red blood cells from oxidative stress—damage caused by reactive oxygen species that can occur during infections or after consuming certain foods and medications. Physicians order this test primarily to investigate the cause of haemolytic anemia, a condition where red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them.
The Qualitative version of this test provides a simple Positive or Negative (Normal vs. Deficient) result. This allows doctors to provide patients with a safe list of medications and foods, effectively preventing future emergency hospitalisations through informed lifestyle management.
