Gene Xpert MTB/RIF
The GeneXpert MTB/RIF is a revolutionary molecular diagnostic test that has transformed the landscape of tuberculosis (TB) detection. Utilizing automated real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology, it provides a highly accurate all-in-one result in less than a day, a drastic improvement over traditional sputum microscopy or weeks-long cultures.
The test focuses on two critical objectives:
Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis: It identifies the DNA of the TB bacteria in sputum samples, offering much higher sensitivity than traditional smear tests, especially in patients with HIV or smear-negative TB.
Rifampicin Resistance: It simultaneously detects mutations in the rpoB gene, which indicates resistance to Rifampicin—the most potent first-line TB drug. Since Rifampicin resistance is a reliable proxy for multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), this allows clinicians to pivot to more effective treatment regimens immediately.
By integrating sample processing, nucleic acid amplification, and detection into a single, self-contained cartridge, GeneXpert minimizes human error and biohazard risks. It is a cornerstone of global health efforts, endorsed by the WHO as the initial diagnostic test for all individuals suspected of having TB, ensuring patients get the right treatment faster and reducing community transmission.
