Pre Surgical Screening - Essentials
The Pre-Anesthesia Check (PAC) Package is a critical safety protocol designed to evaluate patient fitness for general surgery and anaesthesia, ensuring that potential risks are identified and managed before entering the operating theater. Undergoing a surgical procedure requires more than just technical precision; it demands a thorough understanding of the patient’s physiological readiness.
Blood Grouping (ABO RH) is essential for ensuring immediate compatibility should a blood transfusion be required during surgery. Viral Screening includes high-sensitivity screening for HIV 1/2, Hepatitis B (HBsAg), and Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV). These are mandatory to protect both the patient and the surgical team, ensuring appropriate infection control measures are in place. PT-INR & APTT assess the ability of blood to clot. Correct coagulation levels are vital to prevent excessive bleeding during surgery or the formation of dangerous clots post-operatively. Complete Blood Count (CBC) & ESR provide a baseline for hemoglobin levels (to check for anemia) and screen for any active infections or inflammation that might complicate recovery. Kidney (KFT) & Liver (LFT) Function is important because any anaesthetic agents are metabolised by the liver and excreted by the kidneys. These panels ensure these organs can safely process and clear the medications used during the procedure. Random Blood Sugar (RBS): High sugar levels can delay wound healing and increase the risk of post-surgical infections; monitoring this ensures metabolic stability.
The PAC Package is the surgeon and anesthesiologists primary roadmap. By providing a comprehensive snapshot of internal health of the patient—from clotting factors to organ reserves—this package minimizes operative complications, enhances surgical outcomes, and provides peace of mind for both the patient and the medical team.
